Smart Specification of American Hardwoods and their Future Role in Carbon-Neutral Buildings

Packing a powerful message for responsible specifiers, active in the green-building movement and seeking information, is a 24-minute podcast offered by the Hardwood Council.

The podcast is a shortened version of a Hardwood Council sponsored seminar—delivered by timberland owner, conservationist and educator Martha Carlson—presented to the specifying community at the June CONSTRUCT 2009 show in Indianapolis.

Entitled Smart Specification of American Hardwoods and their Future Role in Carbon-Neutral Buildings and based upon the Council’s latest American Institute of Architects approved Continuing Education Unit, the presentation defines carbon neutrality, explores how North American hardwoods naturally offset global warming, provides insight into the valuable role hardwoods play in carbon-neutral construction and puts to rest concerns surrounding sustainability and responsible forest management.

For eco-minded architects, designers and builders, heeding the urgent call for carbon-neutral structures, the message is clear. Over the next 25 years, it’s estimated that carbon dioxide emissions in the building sector will grow faster than any other sector, with commercial buildings having the fastest emissions growth rate.

Be part of the solution.Incorporate more carbon-neutral hardwoods into your designs.Doing so will make a significant difference in a structure’s carbon footprint. After all, hardwoods are the quintessential “green” material. Carbon-neutral structures will help reduce our environmental footprint.

For specifiers desiring to play an active part in the green building movement, where and whenever possible, North American hardwoods are “the” material of choice. Buildings that use less energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide affordable, comfortable and healthy spaces will be the result.
